Library Tales-
From ‘comfort women’ to ‘Flower Granny’
2011 Library Tales
From ‘comfort women’ to ‘Flower Granny’- talking about society through picture books
-In 2006 spring, four picture book authors from Japan proposed a joint Korea China Japan peace picture book project. We were worried about the recent political right wing atmosphere in Japan society and wanted to self reflect on Japan’s past. And we believed picture books were a medium, which could move children’s hearts. We asked what could picture book authors do for the future? I and a few other collegues identified with their concerns and decided to accept their proposal. The time it took till the book came out, at shortest it was 4 years and the longest 30 years.

“ Usually my work period takes from a year up to 3 years. It takes more time to plan than draw and complete the technical parts. I need to make the books by writing in the children’s language and drawing their pictures. The attraction of picture books lies between each page. When people read a book and turn the page, an abundant imaginative world must form each in their own heads. I put in a lot of effort to stimulate their imagination” Urimunhwa (Mar. 2010)
